Absorptive Silencer--Noise Abatement
Introduction
Absorptive silencers provide a practical, engineered solution for controlling duct noise in systems with round duct work. The round shape eliminates the need for costly transitions and the associated turbulence and system pressure drop. With high quality, leak-free construction and many optional features, the absorptive silencer is suitable for most applications.
The absorptive type silencer is the classic dissipative design, deriving its noise control properties from the basic fact that noise energy is effectively "absorbed" by various types of fibrous packing materials.
More technically, as sound waves pass through the spaces between the tightly-packed small diameter fibers of the absorptive material, the resulting viscous friction dissipates the sound energy as small amounts of heat.
This is the most common type of silencer, capable of providing attenuation over a broad range of sound frequencies.
Absorptive silencers use sound-absorptive media to provide effective attenuation on high-noise frequencies (500-8,000 Hz). Absorptive silencers are ideal for industrial fan inlet and discharge, inlet and discharge of high-speed, low pressure centrifugal compressors and blowers, gas turbine inlets, dry vacuum pump discharge, low-pressure vents, turbocharged reciprocating engine inlets, high-pressure centrifugal compressor inlets, high-frequency noise sources, air valves and cylinders and axial compressors.
Construction Absorptive Silencers
Since noise is absorbed by the media, absorptive silencers do not rely on internal baffles, tubes or other restrictive devices to achieve noise reduction. Consequently, absorptive silencers generally employ a "straight-through" or similar internal designs that cause minimal air-flow restriction.
